Two innocent people killed by suspected drunk driver

BROOKSHIRE, TX

The deadly crash happened Sunday along FM 359 near Stenzel Road, just north of Brookshire.

Several of the victims were rushed Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy with broken bones, fractures and bruises, and two of the victims are still recovering there. Family members are devastated.

Lynn Sturm was a 69-year-old father and grandfather, and he was one of two drivers killed in a tragic crash that had a stretch of FM 359 in Brookshire shut down for several hours on Sunday.

State troopers say Everardo Venegas Laureano, 29, is the suspected drunk driver who crashed into two Suburbans, killing Sturm and another driver -- Martin Smith Ullrich, 62, of Houston.

Sturm's family members tell Eyewitness News that he and his wife Leda were returning home from celebrating her birthday when the crash happened.

Investigators say Laureano was erratically driving his 2007 Dodge pickup on the southbound side of FM 359 when he hit a curve and crossed the center stripe.

Eyewitnesses told investigators Laureano first crashed into Sturm's truck, and then collided with Ullrich's Suburban. Three passengers riding with the two victims were rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy.

Family members say Leda Sturm suffered a broken knee cap and lacerations to the wrist. Troopers say Ullrich's passenger, Laura Sullivan, has leg, face and chest injuries. A 17-year old is being treated for bruises.

As for the accused drunk driver, Laureano has been booked in Waller County Jail. He's been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault.
