BARC over capacity, urging Houstonians to adopt pets

HOUSTON

The shelter is now housing 613 dogs and cats and is over its maximum capacity of 550 animals.

"Taking in over 100 animals per day has become routine for us, but we've never seen back-to-back intake like this," said Chris Newport, BARC spokesman. "We took in more animals in 48 hours than most shelters across the U.S. can hold. We are nearly 65 animals over our maximum capacity, and we will take in many, many more tomorrow when we're open to the public again. Every single enclosed space is full right now. We need help to get these animals out."

BARC is Houston's only "open admission" shelter so no animal is turned away.
