It happened around 3:45am on Highway 290 near Hollister. Police say the officer was trying to divert traffic to avoid another accident further down the freeway when he was hit.
Both the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators say the driver of the other vehicle will be tested for possible drunk driving.
