Bryan man guilty in school bomb hoax gets prison

HOUSTON

A federal judge in Houston on Wednesday sentenced 22-year-old Dereon Tayronne Kelley of Bryan.

Kelley last month was convicted of three counts of using the Internet to make a false bomb threat to an academic institution. Kelley also was ordered to pay nearly $16,000 in restitution and a $300 fine.

Prosecutors say Kelley last October hacked into the email account of his ex-girlfriend, who's a former student at the university in San Marcos. He used that account to send three threatening emails to the school's admissions office.

The ex-girlfriend was initially charged but that case was dropped after prosecutors traced the threats to Kelley.
