Fine dining on a budget, for a good cause

HOUSTON

In today's Stretch Your Dollar, we found it's a great way to enjoy fine dining on a budget.

Fine dining and budget normally don't go hand in hand, but during the month of August, it's a pretty good deal. Whether it's lunch or dinner, you can enjoy some of Houston's finest restaurants for a fraction of the price.

"Our 8-ounce filet is about as signature as Del Frisco's gets right there," Del Frisco's Chef Steve Haug said.

They are known for their mouth-watering steaks and seafood, but it usually comes with a high price tag. Diners at Del Frisco's in the Houston Galleria can normally expect to pay anywhere from $75 to $100 for the full dining experience.

But during Houston Restaurant Weeks, at dinner it's $35 for a starter, an entree and dessert.

"It's a great value. You get a lot of food for the price," diner Lindsey Davis said.

Houston Restaurant Weeks is a month-long event where dozens of Houston's finest restaurants have set up $35 dinners and $20 lunches benefiting the Houston Food Bank.

"The city is a melting pot so it has all kinds of people, all kinds of food, so for anyone to be able to go to what is considered a really nice, expensive restaurant for such a great price is a great idea," diner Katie Hamarich said.

The event has many diners already mapping out their dinner plans.

"Del Frisco's, Felipe and Pappa's Steakhouse is another really good one," diner Kristin Prichard said.

"It's a great cause. We are busy, the staff is happy they are making money, the guests are coming out and experiencing Del Frisco's at a cheap price and we are feeding people that need help," Haug said.

For each participating dinner that is served during Houston Restaurant Weeks, $5 goes directly to the Houston Food Bank. For every lunch, it's $3.

"It's an unbelievable fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank. We are very appreciative of how much this raises," Brian Greene said.

To date Houston Restaurant Weeks has raised more than $1.7 million to fight hunger in Houston, and the organization says this year will be even bigger.

Houston Restaurant Weeks has gone up in the popularity and the number of restaurants who have participated every year. This year, it's an unprecedented level of 158 choices.

At the end of the day, you can get more wine and food for the money, and it's for a great cause.

Reservations are highly recommended and places are already filling up. For a list of participating restaurants, go to HoustonRestaurantWeeks.com. When making your reservations, mention that you would like the Houston Restaurant Weeks special menu.

Diners can make a $10 donation directly to the Houston Food Bank by texting "HRW" to 20222.
