Sugar Land approves new animal shelter site at Imperial Park

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Sugar Land is moving forward with a new site for its animal shelter.

At an Aug. 4 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a resolution to change the land use of approximately three acres at Imperial Park for the construction of the city's new animal shelter facility.

The site selection comes after a comprehensive study ordered in May 2024 to find the optimal location for the new animal shelter due to growing community needs, Assistant City Engineer Jonathan Braun said.

The details

Imperial Park-which is located at 7750 Hwy. 90A-was selected due to its convenient access and visibility, having a lower flood risk, pedestrian-friendly access and its distance from residential areas, Braun said.

Other sites considered include:

• Public Safety Complex

• Eldridge Park

• Oyster Creek Park

• North Alt. 90 site

• Four privately-held commercial properties

About the shelter

The new 26,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor facility will be suited to accommodate 80 dogs and 122 cats, Community Impact previously reported. In comparison, the existing shelter can hold 69 cats and 27 dogs, according to the city's website.

The shelter is expected to cost $20 million and will be funded by the city's 2019 and 2024 bonds as well as supplemental funds raised by the Animal Advisory Board.

Braun said design for the new shelter is complete and permitting is underway.

Community Impact reached out for an update on when a construction contract will be brought to council, but the information was not available by press time.
