Investigators say Janice Guidry took the infant to a clinic for shots on October 20, and the doctors there noticed the child was malnourished and suffered fractured legs. They told her to take the baby to a hospital immediately, but they say Guidry ignored the advice.
The child was eventually hospitalized by Child Protective Services three days later. Investigators say the biological mother left the infant with Guidry to raise.
Court documents state Guidry told investigators that the fractures could have occurred when the baby was in a car seat and they both fell down the stairs, however doctors said that is not a plausible explanation for the type of injuries the baby sustained and that the baby's injuries are consistent with abuse and neglect.
Guidry, 55, is charged with injury to a child.
