A family was able to escape a house fire Sunday in southeast Houston, and officials said the only injuries were suffered by a raccoon.

The fire broke out Sunday afternoon on Alta Loma Way at Elmhurst St.

Extra companies were called to the scene because of the heat. The blaze was extinguished but the house was heavily damaged.

The family was home at the time. No one was injured except a raccoon that lives in the attic. Officials said the animal's paws were burned.

The cause of the fire was unknown Sunday.
