Suspect arrested after police chase

HOUSTON The pursuit began around 10am near the North Loop East in the vicinity of Mercury. Jacinto police chased the suspect in a black pickup that had been reported missing from the juvenile detention center.

After about eight minutes, Houston police joined the effort. The suspect sped up and down the East Loop, before heading northbound and exiting to Kelley. A couple of HPD cruisers were damaged during the chase, when the suspect rammed the vehicles, apparently intentionally.

The pursuit ended about 25 minutes after it began, near the Gulf Coast Apartments in the 6600 block of Hirsch near Kelley. The suspect, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, tried to bail out and flee on foot, but he was quickly apprehended.

"The vehicle was reported stolen this morning to the Houston Police Department. From what I understand, it was stolen out of the juvenile probation detention area," said Joe Ayala of the Jacinto Police Department.

The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Rogelio Rodriguez. He's now charged with auto theft and running from police.
