2 arrested in Irvine jewelry store robbery

IRVINE, Calif.

According to the Irvine Police Department, two men entered David Lee Jewelers at 15333 Culver Dr. at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. One of the men allegedly displayed a handgun. The two suspects ordered store employees to open a display case featuring Rolex watches.

The suspects allegedly gathered a number of the watches and fled the store.

An armed security guard gave chase and reportedly fired several shots at the suspects. The bullets did not strike anyone and no injuries were reported.

Irvine police officers arrived approximately three minutes after the suspects fled, according to the department. Police set up a perimeter in the area and located one suspect within about 10 minutes in an apartment complex parking lot.

The second suspect was located with the help of a Orange County Sheriff's K-9 unit about 30 minutes later. He was found hiding in bushes at the same apartment complex.

Perris resident Ruben Darty and Compton resident Maurice Houston Jr. were arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police said much of the stolen property was recovered. A replica handgun was also found. Police believe the replica was used in the jewelry store robbery.
