US$500K gone from tsunami-cracked bank safe

Police say the earthquake and tsunami that pulverized coastal Japan crippled a bank's security mechanisms, and left a safe wide open. That allowed someone to walk off with 40 million yen (US$500,000). Police said the Shinkin Bank in the destroyed city of Kesennuma notified them Tuesday about the missing money.

The tsunami washed over the bank, like much else in Kesennuma, on March 11, and police say between the wave's power and the ensuing power outages, the safe came open.
