The Houston Democrat was still having trouble speaking Monday, but his condition had stabilized enough for him to be moved from intensive care to a private room, Johnson said.
Wilson, an attorney known for wearing black leather and sunglasses indoors, lost his primary re-election bid in 2004 after a 27-year career in the state House.
He re-emerged three years later as a deputy parliamentarian to then-House Speaker Tom Craddick. Wilson's sudden, late-night appearance in the House surprised onlookers during a dramatic effort to overthrow Craddick.
