For nearly three decades, "Mattress Mack" has been selling furniture and his personality to Houstonians. But along the way, he's changed people's lives.

Countless times, Mack and his employees stepped in to help families who lost everything to floods and fires Gallery Furniture also came through for families who made Houston their new home after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

"As far as home furniture, we're there for the citizens of Houston, Katrina and fire, it doesn't get any worse than that," said owner Jim McIngvale. "Whatever they need, we'll get it to them today."

Back in 2001, Mack paid for a trip for young Houston Catholics to see the Pope at the Vatican.

Whether it was raising money for hurricane or tsunami relief or making sure storm drains around his store's neighborhood weren't clogged or investing $5,000 in a northwest Houston Food Pantry earlier this month, Mack has also been a major investor in the fabric of Houston.

Selling furniture is his life's work, but his life's mission has become teaching others it's better to give than to receive.

In a statement on the store's website, "Mattress Mack" says he will re-open the North Freeway location as soon as he's able. He also thanked Houstonians for their prayers.
