The schools identified by NCEA are those that exhibit outstanding performance across multiple grades and years. The elementary grades were separated because "growth" was included in the fourth and fifth grade analysis, but not in the third grade analysis, since students are not tested prior to third grade. NCEA's analysis included student test results from spring 2006, 2007, and 2008.
"Lanier students, staff and parents take great pride in their academics and work hard to excel in all academic subjects," said Lanier Principal Bill Shell. "We are honored to be recognized by the National Center for Education Achievement for making their list of higher performing schools in all subject areas." Lanier Middle School is an International Baccalaureate Middle Years School.
DeBakey Principal Linda Lazenby said, "We owe this success to our hardworking teachers and students. We have an incredibly strong team of dedicated teachers who are driven to continuously challenge our students, and the whole school community works together to make this kind of achievement possible." In the 5th Annual AP Report to the Nation, the College Board, which administers the AP program, recently announced that DeBakey leads the nation in the number of African-American students taking and passing Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus exams.
"We are very excited about making this list and the hard work of the teachers and students shows in this achievement," said Kennedy Elementary Principal Daryl Sherman. "We are working hard each and every day to make sure our students remain successful each and every year."
"The entire Carnegie Vanguard High School community works interdependently to continue our goal of raising student achievement and academic growth," said Carnegie Principal Ramon Moss. "Teachers, counselors, and administrators make great contributions towards ensuring our students are prepared for higher education and career readiness. We work together as a professional learning community to address instructional practices in order to achieve greater performance. It is quite an honor to be recognized by Just for the Kids and NCEA as one of a small percentage of high performing high schools."
HISD schools ranked "Higher Performing Schools" in at least one subject area include: High School: The High School for Performing and Visual Arts. Middle Schools: Clifton, Energized for Excellence, Hamilton, Johnston, Kaleidoscope, Pin Oak, Rice School, and TH Rogers. Upper Elementary: Milne, Atherton, Bush, Briscoe, Cage, Condit, Cornelius, Crespo, Cunningham, Dogan, Durkee, Energized for Excellence; Grissom, Henderson; Horn; Kelso; Kennedy; Kolter; Lyons; Mading; R. Martinez, Northline, Oats, Ross, Rusk, Scott, Seguin, and Windsor Village. Lower Elementary: Bush, Barrick, Burrus, Cage, Condit, Cornelius, Davila, De Chaumes, De Zavala, Emerson, Gregg, J Henderson, Hohl, Janowski, Jean Hines-Caldwell, Kolter, Lockhart, MacArthur, McDade, Neff, Northline, Rice School, Scott, Smith, Stevens, Sutton, and Whittier.
