German mother guilty of killing infants

SIEGEN, Germany The Siegen state court on Monday sentenced 44-year-old Monika Halbe to four years and three months in prison for killing the children born in 1988 and 2003 by suffocation or neglect. She also allegedly killed a third child shortly after its birth in 1986 but could not be prosecuted because the statute of limitations had expired.

The bodies of the three infant girls were found in the freezer by Halbe's 18-year-old son, who was searching for a frozen pizza at the family's home in the town of Wenden, northwest of Frankfurt. Halbe has two other adult children.

Halbe then turned herself in.
