Deadline for 'Blue Roof' requests is today

HOUSTON ROAD TO RECOVERY: How you can help | Person locator | Important phone numbers | Assistance from FEMA | Filing a claim

The deadline is today, if you need a free, temporary roof repair, to head to a collection center and sign up.

Operation Blue-Roof is run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Corps contractors will install a huge blue tarp, or plastic sheeting, as a temporary hold to keep rain out while you wait for repairs.

You have to sign a "Right of Entry" form to allow contractors to work on your home, and it takes about two weeks for them to show up and make those temporary repairs. Hurricane victims have requested around 33,000 blue roofs so far, and contractors have installed more than 20,000 already.

There are some requirements for the Operation Blue Roof:

  • Proof of residency
  • Know the kind of roof you have
  • Less than 50% structural damage
  • There are 13 Collection Centers located in Harris, Galveston and Jefferson counties. To hear a recording of locations, Texas residents can call 1-888- ROOF-BLU (1-888-766-3258).
