Benton would not disclose why Carol Paul was admitted to the hospita Monday, only saying "she has had several abdominal surgeries."

A Texas congressman from Lake Jackson, Paul ran for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination. His campaign, which was a sensation on the Internet, drew support not only from Republicans but also from independents and Democrats.
