Reloading in Katy

KATY, TX The defending 5A champion Katy Tigers were out bright and early. Some will say it's a rebuilding year for the Tigers. Out in Katy though, it's more like reloading.

The Tigers have some huge shoes to fill. Andre Dean is now at UCLA. Bo Levi Mitchell is an SMU Mustang. Katy has just a couple of returning starters from last year's undefeated state champs.

Katy head Coach Gary Joseph has his hands full, but he knows he has some talent. It's just time now to whip them into shape.

"Our kids understand what's going on and I know that it may take us some time to get gelling again, but I think eventually by the time we hit the playoffs, if we can get there, we'll be fine," said Joseph.

The Tigers don't catch any breaks in their pre-district schedule. They play North Shore, The Woodlands, Lewisvill-Marcus and Beaumont Westbrook, all on the road.

"Our kids are going to grow up. The thing about it is they're going to have to grow up in a hurry," said Joseph. "Like I said, you'd better keep that in perspective, too, because it doesn't matter until you get into district. That's our goal, to win the district championship and get in the playoffs and try to make another playoff run."

"You are still Katy," we said.

"I understand that, but it's a new group, it's a new group every year. The kids have to find their own niche, too. They are Katy. That is important. Tradition is important, but every group's been different. Every group has to find their own niche, their own leadership."

Katy open up at North Shore on August 29. We kick off our second season of High School Hot Shots Sunday, August 24 at 10pm.. You can see Hot Shots on Digital Channel 13.2 or Comcast cable.channel 314.
