LOS ANGELES, CA (KTRK) -- A California woman is in the burn ward of a hospital after taking a friend's antibiotic medication.
Yassmeen Castanada, 19, suffered a rare allergic reaction that caused her to burn from the inside out.
Castanada wasn't feeling well on Thanksgiving, so she took a friend's leftover antibiotic. Her eyes, nose and throat began to burn and she was rushed to the emergency room. Her body erupted in blisters and she was put on a ventilator.
Her mother, Laura Corona, says it is hard to watch. "(All I want is) for her not to suffer, that's it, that is all I want," she said.
Doctors diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. The extreme reaction she had can occur even when medication is prescribed by a doctor and taken properly.
