Denver salon offers 'Beer and Braids' event for dads and daughters

DENVER, CO (KTRK) -- Some dads are getting a little but very important lesson. They're learning how to do their daughters' hair.

Envogue Salon in Denver hosted a night called "Beer and Braids." The owner of the salon, Calli Hueble-Bodilis, created the event to encourage dads to get more involved in their daughters' lives.

"We actually have one-on-one coaching for the dads. We teach them how to do three different looks for their daughters hair" Calli said. "Dads today are so much more hands-on. Many of my (female clients) are the breadwinners, the CEOs, and the dads stay at home."

The dads each paid $55 for the class and got one hour of training from stylists on how to make braids, ponytails and buns.

"I had one dad who was so nervous his hands were shaking," Calli Huebl-Bodilis said. "But by the end, he was laughing and joking. I told him, 'It's OK, take a deep breath, it's just hair.'"

"This is a great opportunity because I don't listen to my wife when she tries to teach me, so it's nice to get to listen to somebody else and learn how to do this," said Tom Reimann, who gets his daughter Reese ready for school each morning

Tom said it also helped to be around other dads at the event in the same situation.

"I probably wouldn't do it if it was just by myself," Tom said. "It's good to have other guys who can screw up and laugh about it."

At the end of the training session, the girls got to show off their new 'do's in a runway contest. The girl voted to have the best hairstyle won a free six-pack of beer for her dad and a goody bags of hair products for her to take home.

"Clients love it. Moms love it, dads love it," Calli said. "And it's such a special memory for the daughters."

The salon is already planning another "Beer and Braids" event in November.
