Country music star Clay Walker opens up about living with Multiple Sclerosis

HOCKLEY, TX (KTRK) -- Country music star Clay Walker is best known for his crooning, but he is also living with Multiple Sclerosis.

Three years after the release of his first single, Walker received the diagnosis.

"When I was dealt that blow I was devastated being diagnosed with a debilitating disease," Walker said.

Nineteen years later, he has never let it put the brakes on his music career.

"The stage for me is the sweet spot," Walker said.

The wheels kept turning, and after a couple of medical trials things changed.

"The old saying used to be diagnosed and adios, and now that spectrum has completely changed," Walker said.

He is using his stage to raise awareness about the debilitating disease. In January, the country crooner turned cyclist to Band Against MS at a ride in Hockley, Texas.

At his BAMS ride, he reaches out to every rider who comes by.

"I've heard it said to whom much is given, much is expected. I just want to do my part," Walker said. "To see people who have MS and their families riding side by side. It makes me get a little bit emotional."

Walker's ride has raised more than $2 million to date, and most of the money has gone to research and programs in the Houston area. He says he accepts the challenge of living with MS and being an ambassador for others.

"I've always believed if we find a cure for MS it is going to open the door for all kinds of neurological disorders," Walker said.

He has been relapse free for 17 years, and recent advancements mean shots fewer times a week for him.

"I was doing the math this morning and that's 208 less shots for me, I'm pretty stoked about that," Walker said.
