HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An officer shot and killed a suspect who reached for his partner's weapon Monday morning in northeast Houston, Houston police said.
According to an update from HPD, this all started when police received a call at 7:55 a.m. about a man with a sharp object slashing tires on vehicles and breaking windows at 7206 Bretshire.
When police arrived a few minutes later, they tried to take the man into custody, but he refused and ran away to the intersection of Bretshire near Homestead, HPD Exec. Asst. Chief Alvaro Guzman said.
Officers chased after him and a struggle between police and the suspect ensued.
While they were rolling on the ground, the suspect got on top of one of the officers and tried to reach for his weapon, which remained in its holster, Guzman said.
That's when a different officer shot the suspect twice, killing him, police told ABC13.
The three officers involved will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation, which is protocol.
Guzman said HPD will also release body camera footage in 30 days.
The officer who fired his weapon is 30 years old. He's been with the department for 5 1/2 years.
The other two officers are 30 and 31 years old. Both have been with HPD for 3 1/2 years.
No officers were injured.
