SWAT standoff with suspect in tree ends after 6 hours in Sunnyside
Police said the armed suspect tried to get away from police by climbing into a tree, sparking an hours-long standoff. He was eventually arrested.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two people are in custody after an hours-long standoff that involved one suspect trying to avoid police by hiding in a tree in Sunnyside, authorities told ABC13.

It all began shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday, when Houston police officers responded to 2605 Reed Rd. near Highway 288 for a home invasion.

When officers arrived, they said they saw shots fired at the person who initially called police.

The person wasn't hit, but the two suspects ran off into a wooded area.

One suspect was caught by a K-9 unit. He's being treated at a hospital before going to jail. He's also expected to face charges.

The second suspect, who police said was still armed, climbed into a tree.

SWAT and hostage negotiators were called and gave verbal commands to the man to come down from the tree.

After roughly six hours, the suspect surrendered and was arrested.

Houston TranStar cameras showed a heavy police presence, including a SWAT vehicle, in the area Monday night.

Two helicopters, one belonging to HPD and another to DPS, also provided support.

No officers were injured.
