Houston Astros shortstop Jed Lowriewill have surgery Friday for a torn ligament in his right thumb and is expected to be out until after the All-Star break.

He was injured Monday night while sliding into home plate in the eighth inning of the Astros' 9-4 winagainst San Diego.

"Obviously Jed is a big part of our team this year so far," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told the Houston Chronicle. "And we expect him to be part of this team in the second half, but he's going to miss the next couple of months."

Lowrie, who was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday, is hitting .300 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.

Infielder Jonathan Villar was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to replace Lowrie on the roster.

Luhnow told the New York Post that top prospect Carlos Correa, who is hitting .385 with five home runs and 22 RBIs at Double-A Corpus Christi, needs seasoning before rising to the majors.

"Carlos is getting close, but he's had 70 at-bats above A-ball, so we'd like to see more," Luhnow told the Post.
