Roof collapses on firefighters during NW Harris County apartment complex blaze

HOUSTON

The fire broke out at the Villages of Copperfield apartments near Pebble Lake and Highway 6. An entire apartment building is gone.

The roof collapsed while firefighters were working inside. A firefighter fell through the second floor, but remarkably he just got up, dusted himself off and kept working because he was looking for two trapped pets. Another two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion but were treated at the scene.

Julie Kosik got a call at work telling her apartment was on fire. Her two dogs were locked in their kennels inside the burning building.

"That was the best thing, seeing both of them, because the kids weren't there so I knew that was good. But the dogs, that was test thing," she said.

Kosik's dogs Tex and Dakota are fine.

In all, 11 families lost everything. But, the ones who were home at the time got out safely.

"It's fine. It's just material things now. I've gotten to that point," Kosik said.

Meanwhile, lot of residents are coming returning from work and finding about the fire.

The American Red Cross is on the way to help displaced families.

Lt. Dean Hensley of the Harris County Fire Marshal Office says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
