Liberty County judge, wife taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann after head-on wreck

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX

It happened just after midnight in the 800 block of County Road 603 in south Liberty County. According to investigators, Judge Craig McNair and his wife, Lisa, were in a vehicle traveling northbound when a vehicle traveling southbound with flashing red and blue lights crossed over into the northbound lanes, causing the accident.

The McNairs were transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital and are said to be stable.

Investigators say when they arrived, Edgar Mata, 21, was on scene and told them that he was the one driving the vehicle that struck the McNairs. But further investigation revealed that Edgar Mata's brother, German Mata, 17, was actually behind the wheel and left the scene. German Mata was later found sleeping at his home and arrested.

Both Mata brothers were arrested. German Mata was charged with failure to stop and render aid, improper use of red and blue lights and not having a Texas driver license. Edgar Mata was charged with making a false report to a peace officer.

At this point, it's not clear why the younger Mata brother was driving with the flashing red and blue lights.
