South Texas spa owner accused of fake injections

McALLEN, TX

Federal prosecutors in McAllen say 37-year-old Elva Navarro remained in custody Thursday pending an initial appearance before a magistrate.

Navarro, who ran Bella Face and Body Spa in McAllen, was arrested Wednesday after being indicted for violating Food and Drug Administration regulations.

Navarro is charged with receiving an adulterated device and misbranding a device. She allegedly injected liquid silicone into customers and falsely said the process was safe. Investigators have said one Navarro client in 2012 spent more than two weeks hospitalized after receiving such injections.

Authorities didn't immediately provide information about an attorney for Navarro. A phone number listed for the spa was not in service Thursday.
