Man found dead in ditch on Houston's south side

HOUSTON

Police were called to a home on Phlox Road near Cullen a little after 5am Friday by a woman who said her husband had been shot.

Latonia Bailey with HPD said, "Opened the car door. Wife and neighbors heard shots from outside. Walked outside and found him dead in the ditch. No suspects and we don't have any witnesses."

The man's family identified him as Jose Gomez, 36. They say he owns a landscaping business, and was about to leave for work. They have no idea who would want to hurt him or why.

"He didn't have no problems with nobody," said Gilbert Gomez, the victim's brother. "Never started any problems. He just loved his girl, loved his kids."

Gilbert says his brother just recently moved into the neighborhood with his family, and liked how quiet it is.

"He would tell me about the area, nobody bothers nobody around here," Gilbert recalled. "Everybody's pretty to themselves, and I kind of like it right here. He was happy about just getting his place."

"We don't know who would want him dead or why, but if the public can help, we need you," Bailey said.

And by help, they mean anyone who thinks they might have seen anything unusual in the area Friday morning. You can call the Houston Police Department's homicide division or leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
