One dead in plane crash in San Jacinto County

SHEPHERD, TX

The crash happened around 1:30pm. According to DPS, the plane took off from Lake Water Wheel Airport and was flying over the area near Shraderville Road and Work Drive when it went down.

Neighbors tell us they heard a loud sound and then moments later, the plane hit the ground. According to the DPS, the pilot was killed instantly.

People who live near the airport say they often see small planes in the area, and every now and then, one of them goes down.

"We see them all the time. We're out here on the front porch playing basketball and they've always come close to the ground," said nearby resident Doug Lilley. "They've done flips and stuff, you know. There's a bunch of retired people over there, and that's what they do for fun."

DPS has identified the man killed in the crash as 76-year-old James Goldsmith of New Caney. They say he was the only person in the plane.

The FAA was on the the scene and the National Transportation Safety board will investigate Monday morning.
