Fire officials said a blaze at a retirement community in southeast Houston on Sunday apparently started in an air-conditioning unit.

It happened around 9:30am at Oak Shadows Allendale Retirement Community apartments in the 4800 block of Allendale Road at Peach Creek Drive.

According to the Houston Fire Department, the fire likely started in an air-conditioning unit and spread into an apartment. The fire caused severe damage in that unit, and two others sustained smoke damage.

A man was in the unit when the fire broke out, but he was able to escape safely. No injuries were reported.

Management said they were working to move the man into another unit on the property.
