A local boy scout was recognized Sunday for saving a girl in the water.

Sammy Armstrong received an honor medal from the Boy Scouts at Fairfield Baptist Church.

The seventh grader from Cypress was swimming at McKinney Falls State Park in Austin last summer when he saw a five-year-old girl fall into the water.

"I just swim over and put her on my back. And she climbs on my head and pushes me underwater," Sammy said. "So then I push her off and I asked, 'Can you swim?' And she says, 'Yes.' So I put her back on my back to calm her down a little bit and I swim over to this huge rock and just sit there and wait for some help."

The family of the girl provided testimony to the Boy Scouts to help him get the award.
