The Federal Aviation Administration says the pilot was not in contact with air traffic controllers at the time of Thursday night's crash near Marion. FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said Friday that the crash happened during a landing attempt near Zuehl Airport.

The pilot was alone in the single-engine experimental RV-7A plane. The crash happened in an area about 20 miles northeast of San Antonio.
