Nearly 20 plans offer suggestions for Astrodome's future

HOUSTON

County officials still haven't released those proposals to the public, but the best ideas will be submitted to commissioner's court on June 25.

However, one man isn't waiting until then and actually plans to bypass commissioner's court. Ted Powell is appealing to the state to declare the iconic stadium a historic site. It's a move that would protect the dome from being torn down, but also make the dome subject to more regulations.

"It could be listed on the national registry perhaps by the first quarter of the next year," he said. "Once that happens, that opens up doors for special funding for historical structures."

Powell has been successful in the past with historic preservation and was behind the historical designation of the Sylan Beach pavilion in La Porte
