HPD searching for weapon suspected car thief allegedly pointed at officer, prompting him to fire

HOUSTON

It happened shortly before 9pm in the 16000 block of Maladi in southwest Houston.

The officer, identified by HPD as M. Rivera, was patrolling a neighborhood in southwest Houston, after receiving a call of cars racing. The officer noticed two vehicles fitting those descriptions, so he tried to pull them over.

Authorities say that is when a minivan came to a stop on a Field on Maladi Street. Police say two people jumped out of the minivan and one pointed a rifle at Officer Rivera, so he discharged his duty weapon.

The driver, a juvenile, was arrested and police are talking to a person of interest.

"At this point, they're possibly looking at aggravated assault of a peace officer, given the fact that the juvenile pointed the gun at the direction of the officer," said HPD spokesperson Victor Senties.

No one was hit by the officer's bullet. Investigators are looking for the suspect's weapon.
