An eight-year-old girl died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle in Conroe, officials said.

It happened just before 6pm on FM 1314 near Bert Brown Road.

DPS troopers say 8-year-old Jazmin Alvarez, along with her 14-year-old sister and several other children, were walking from their neighborhood to a convenience store.

Investigators say the group of kids was walking along the shoulder of the road when Jazmin crossed right in front of a blue pickup truck. She was hit and killed.

Neighbors say they can't believe what happened.

"It's hard, real hard. She was a sweet kid," said neighbor Garland Barnett. "She was a real sweet little kid and she didn't get a chance on life now."

According to the DPS, the driver of the truck stayed on the scene to talk to investigators. Right now, authorities say no charges will be filed in this case.
