Several Houston area game rooms raided overnight

HOUSTON

The sign on the marquee at one of the businesses on Woodforest near Uvalde in northeast Harris County says 'Lending and Mortgage,' but police found a whole lot more than that going on in there. They say they found what looks like an illegal gambling operation.

Undercover officers arrested one person there and seized two eight-liner style game machines, which are like slot machines.

It was one of 12 game rooms busted in an overnight sweep of illegal establishments across the city. The game rooms have been a problem for law enforcement, according to the district attorney's office, and just last week, there was a shootout outside another game room that injured a security guard.

In some cases, the game rooms can be legal, as long as the payouts are less than five dollars. It's a fuzzy legal area, and the district attorney's office has been lobbying to have lawmakers take another look at the issue.
