Battleground Texas is a Democratic effort to make the state more competitive in coming elections. Both nationally and statewide, Republicans have dominated Texas politics for the better part of two decades.
But Democrats see an opportunity as the demographics change.
"Texas is so much more ready for this than anyone thinks. And I think we see it from the momentum and energy from volunteers. I haven't met anyone who says this can't be done. They're just excited to get to it," said Jenn Brown with Battleground Texas.
The effort is modeled after the success of the Obama campaign in 2008 and 2012 to utilize the power of community organizing.
In attendance were some of the area's better known Democrats Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee and Gene Green and newly elected State Senator Sylvia Garcia.
