The 42nd Bayou City Art Festival has plenty of activities for visitors young and old.
Organizers say 300 artists will be featured at this weekend's event, representing 19 different media formats from clay to photography to jewelry to painting.
Visitors can buy the artists' creations. The festival also includes a creative zone for children to make their own art projects.
One visiting artist says he appreciates the Houston art scene.
"In general, it's a very good crowd," he said. "They are here because they want to look at and acquire art."
For a lot of the artists, it's their life's work on display. Jim Newberry, for instance, has been making wooden toys for 30 years.
"Back when I was much younger and I had kids and nieces and nephews, I was tired of the plastic toys I was buying for them, so I started making wooden toys just for family and friends, and it turned into a full-time job," Newberry said.
The Bayou City Art Festival is a bi-annual fundraiser produced by the Arts Colony Association to raise money for local arts and service nonprofits.
Gates open at 10am and the event runs through 6pm Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12 and can be purchased online or at the gates.
There's no parking at the park, but shuttles are running from the downtown Theater District and the Northwest Mall.
