Apartment fire damages 16 units in northwest Houston

HOUSTON

The fire broke out around 8pm at The Woods at Lamonte Apartments in the 4800 block of Lamont near Mangum.

We don't yet know what started the fire, but we do know 16 units were damaged. Firefighters were concerned this could have been much worse.

The apartment buildings share a common attic. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming from one unit. The fire spread into the attack and traveled the entire length of the building.

Three alarms were pulled in all. About 85 firefighters responded to the incident.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze within about an hour. While no one was hurt, a firefighter was taken to a hospital for dehydration.

Residents say they saw flames and a lot of smoke right after 7pm.

"Someone came beating on the door, just telling me, 'Man, there is a fire going on,' and I looked out and all this smoke was coming out from his apartment," one resident told us.

The residents with smoke and water damage at their homes are being relocated to vacant apartments at the complex.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
