Firefighters tackle two fires in east Houston

HOUSTON

One fire started just before 2pm at a house along Market Street near the East Freeway.

Firefighters say a woman was cooking in the kitchen and then walked away from the stove. She came back and realized it was on fire.

The woman and her family were trapped by the fire until a good Samaritan nearby helped them get out of the burning house.

The other fire started about a half hour earlier at Mulvey New Chew. Nearby residents say the house has been vacant for years and had no electricity.

Residents also say they have seen a homeless man coming in and out of the house for years. No one was hurt in this fire.
