Wildfire-damaged Bastrop gets school rules break

AUSTIN, TX

The Texas Education Agency has exempted the Bastrop Independent School District. The Austin American-Statesman reported Thursday that the district temporarily has been waived from providing so-called adequate yearly progress requirements.

September 2011 wildfires in Bastrop County, about 30 miles east of Austin, claimed two lives and burned more than 1,700 structures. The natural disaster significantly affected students and staff, interrupting classes and burning some homes.

A preliminary review last August found several Bastrop campuses not meeting all federal academic standards.

The Bastrop school board plans a public hearing Jan. 15 to discuss a report on 2011-2012 student performance, plus updates on staff, finances and programs.
