Officials: Gunmen kill 3 people in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD,

The officials say one attack took place around noon Wednesday. Gunmen opened fire on an army checkpoint in eastern Mosul, killing the two soldiers. Mosul is about 360 kilometers, or 225 miles, northwest of Baghdad.

The officials say that gunmen shot dead a man near his house in another attack, also in Mosul.

A morgue official confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.
