It started at the Mewport apartments on East South near Fairway shortly before 10pm.
Police say the man went to his ex-girlfriend's home and shot her new boyfriend. According to investigators, he then dragged her outside broke into someone else's car and then held her hostage at gunpoint for hours.
Eventually, police officers on scene say they were forced to shoot and kill the suspect.
"We felt he was going to take her life. We had to take his life and took one fatal shot," said Chief Mike Merkle with the Alvin Police Department. "So tonight at 3am, Stephen (no last name given) at 47 years old was fatally wounded by our agency response team."
The woman is expected to be OK. Her boyfriend is also recovering in the hospital.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
