Pasadena students to participate in World Scholar's Cup

PASADENA, TX

Alondra Serna, Pedro Reyes and Eduardo Aleman are an academic team chosen to represent America in the "World Scholar's Cup" in Thailand this month. Pasadena ISD officials had researched the area and found it unsafe, so they were opposed to allowing the kids to go.

Spokesperson Rene Ivy says that on Tuesday afternoon, family members met with Pasadena ISD Superintendent Kirk Lewis to discuss security concerns. The issue was further taken up at a board meeting Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday morning, Lewis announced the students will be allowed to travel to Bangkok, along with their teacher/coach Tricia Henderson and Assistant Principal Louis Byron. The World Scholar's Cup organizers will be providing extra security and they assured school officials that the majority of the time, the students will be in the competition in a safe area. The school district will cover the cost for the students to attend the competition and represent the USA.

The Pasadena students are currently the number one seeded team in the competition.
