Police: Men open fire on officers in SE Houston

HOUSTON

Three HPD officers were investigating alleged drug activity around midnight on Beatty near Telephone Road in southeast Houston. One officer was outside the squad car and two officers inside when they said they heard shots and they could see someone shooting at them from a nearby pickup truck.

One officer returned fire and three men in that pickup truck abandoned the vehicle and tried to run. Two were arrested immediately and a third ran into a bayou nearby, but was caught and arrested. At least one gun was recovered from the pickup truck.

The officer who fired the shots is identified as Officer S. Grimes. He is a 14-year veteran with the Houston Police Department.

There was one other vehicle was struck by gunfire. The individuals in that vehicle were all interviewed and they were found not to be involved in this case.

One man did sustain some injuries because he allegedly resisted officers. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and is expected to be OK.

All three men will go the Harris County Jail and could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
