Boy, 14, arrested after police chase in stolen car

HOUSTON

Around 5am, a Houston Police Department unit tried to stop a Nissan Altima for a traffic violation at Tidwell and Shepherd in northeast Houston.

According to officials, the car took off and the HPD unit gave chase.

Police pursued the car east on Tidwell to Nordling and then to Rittenhouse where they went to Garcia.

Authorities said the driver jumped out of the car on Rittenhouse at Garcia and fled on foot. That's when the passenger -– a 14-year-old male -- reportedly slid into the driver's seat.

Officers followed the new driver down Garcia to John Alber Road where he lost control and crashed into a ditch.

The teen was arrested. Police searched the area but never found the original driver.

After the chase ended, officers discovered the car had just been stolen at gunpoint from a couple at a McDonalds somewhere on the north side.

HPD brought the carjacking victims to the scene to recover it.
