City Council OKs changes to homeless feeding ordinance

HOUSTON

City Council voted to amend the ordinance that takes effect July 1. The new order makes it illegal to feed the homeless in the central business district without permission from the property owner.

One charity group says this makes it illegal for someone driving around to stop and give food to a homeless person.

"The coalition is gonna be energized to take this on in all the other avenues that become possible at this point in terms of lawsuit's petitions," said Nick Cooper with the Houston Keep Sharing Free Coalition.

Councilwoman Helena Brown says the ordinance will cause crime to go up, as hungry people become desperate to get food.
