County judge in Texas accused in drug case to quit

SEGUIN, TX

Guadalupe County Judge Mike Wiggins says he will turn in his resignation letter March 26. He announced his plans Tuesday during a county commission meeting.

Wiggins had faced public criticism following his Feb. 6 arrest at a hotel in College Station.

The 58-year-old former Texas trooper was attending a conference when a hotel worker noticed the smell of burning marijuana. Security traced the odor to the county judge's room.

Police say a search turned up rolling papers and a bag of what appeared to be marijuana. Wiggins, who was elected in 2006, is free on $3,000 bond.

Commissioner Kyle Kutscher is expected to serve as acting county judge.
