Off-duty HPD officers shoot teen in SE Houston

HOUSTON

Several officers were working security at the El Rodeo nightclub on the Gulf Freeway at Edgebrook.

Around 1am, Officers B. Graham and W. Blevins -- each on the force for three years -- responded to a report of suspicious activity in the parking lot. According to officials, someone reported two men looking into cars like they were trying to break in.

The officers approached the suspects in a golf cart as the duo jumped into a black Cadillac and tried to pull out of the parking spot, but a truck blocked them from the front.

With the officers standing behind them, investigators said the driver -- 19-year-old Hector Lopez Jr. -- put the car into reverse and zoomed backward, striking both officers.

One was hit in the stomach and knocked down. The other officer's belt was hit, knocking his gun to the ground. Officials said that officer picked his gun up and fired once.

The other officer got up off the ground and also fired into the car, police said.

Lopez was hit at least once, possibly in the abdomen, and taken to Ben Taub General Hospital. At last check, he was stable.

The passenger -- Jamie Acevedo, 32 -- tried to run away but was taken into custody, officials said.

According to police, both suspects have several prior charges on their records, including histories of vehicle burglary. This time, both face charges of felony evading arrest or detention. Lopez also faces two counts of felony aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.

Authorities said the officers were not seriously injured and did not need to be transported.
