Coast Guard rescues injured elderly on vessel in Matagorda Bay

HOUSTON

The incident happened approximately 17 miles south of Matagorda Bay.

Watchstanders at Sector Corpus Christi received a report around 9am Friday that an 82-year-old man aboard the Cache, a 50-foot sailing vessel, suffered a head injury and required immediate medical assistance.

Crews from the Station Port O'Connor and Air Station Corpus Christi responded and took the man off the sailboat and transported him to Victoria Regional Airport to seek emergency medical attention.

"The sailboat crew did a good job of providing first aid until we were able to get on scene," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Hernandez, the coxswain of the UTB. "This is a prime example of how being a prepared mariner and using VHF-FM marine channel 16 can help the Coast Guard to quickly and safely provide assistance to mariners in distress."
